Paul McCartney hot, jazzy, 1920s style. George Martin's score for seven saxophones and
clarinets lends the song precisely the right period feel, and the inclusion of a scratchy
vocal line imitating a 78rpm wind-up phonograph was a clever idea. The song bears no
relation to Wild Honey Pie
The Beatles held rehearsal sessions at George Harrison's
home in Esher on May 20, 1968, during which they recorded a demo of 'Honey
Pie'. This recording was released in both the US and the UK on October 29,
1996 on "The Beatles Anthology Volume 3."
The Beatles began recording 'Honey Pie' at Trident
Studios on October 1, 1968. One take of the basic track - piano (Paul
McCartney), bass (George Harrison), drums (Ringo Starr), and electric guitar
(John Lennon) - was recorded this day, with many rehearsals prior to this
first take. Paul added his lead vocal and another lead guitar on October 2.
The brass and woodwinds were added October 4, as were the effects on the line
"Now she's hit the big time" (heavily limited and made to sound like
an old 78 rpm record). Both the mono and stereo mixing was completed October
5, both requiring only one attempt from the completed take 1. Once these mixes
arrived back at Abbey Road on October 7, they were copied to the EMI method of
recording.
