Virtually written by Paul in the studio as the session progressed, Birthday is a
powerful rock number recorded and completed by all four Beatles in one swift session, save
for a two-hour break when musicians and studio staff rushed around to Paul's house nerby
to watch The Girl Can't Help It. Pattie Harrison and Yoko One contributed backing
vocals.
The Beatles recorded 'Birthday' on September 18, 1968.
Paul McCartney arrived at the studio before the other Beatles, playing the
song's riff. He wrote the song in the studio and when the others arrived, they
recorded it in twenty takes (1 - 20). The recording began on four-track but
was transferred to eight-track (take 20 into takes 21 and 22). The mono mix
was also prepared this day (remix 1 from take 22). The stereo mix was created
on October 14 (remix 1 from take 22). The stereo version has additional vocals
at the end of the second chorus, which are missing from the mono version. The
track was released on The Beatles' album "The Beatles" on November
22, 1968.
In the spring of 1976 George Martin remixed a stereo
version of this track in Los Angeles for the US release of the "Rock 'N'
Roll Music" album. This album was released in the US on June 7, 1976. The
UK release of this album featured the original stereo mix of this track.
A shortened version of this song is found on the Italian
eight-track edition of the "Rock 'N' Roll Music" album.
Paul McCartney performed this song at the June 30, 1990
Knebworth Benefit Concert. This performance was released in both the US and
the UK November 5, 1990 on the "Tripping The Live Fantastic" album.
