John Lennon at his other extreme: as slushy a ballad as one could ever hear, written
for his son Julian but expressly for Ringo to sing. Original recordings featured Beatles
instrumentation but these were discarded in favour of an all-orchestral music track: 12
violins, three violas, three flutes, three cellos, a harp, clarinet, horn, vibraphone,
string bass, celeste and piano. Ringo backed by eight singers from the mike Sammes troupe
(which also featured on I Am The Walrus), recorded his plaintive
vocal during the same 22 July 1968 session.
The Beatles began recording on June 28, 1969. Five takes
(1 - 5) were recorded this day of John Lennon on acoustic guitar and Ringo
Starr on vocals. On July 2, new lead vocals were added to take five and
harmony backing vocals were recorded (takes 6 - 15). The song was begun again
on July 22, beginning with take 23. Twelve takes of the orchestra were taped
(takes 23 - 34) and the choir was added. Once this was complete Ringo added
his lead vocal on this day and six mono mixes were created July 23. Two more
mono mixes and one stereo mix were prepared October 11 and used for release.
Ringo gave a copy of a mono mix of 'Good Night' to Peter Sellers. On this
version, the final "good night" is clearer and some voices are just
barely heard in the background. This mix has been bootlegged and can be found
on "Unsurpassed Masters" (CD).
An unnumbered rehearsal take recorded June 28, 1968 was
released in both the US and the UK on October 29, 1996 on "The Beatles
Anthology Volume 3." This track was crossfaded into take 34 - the
released take.
John and Yoko Ono recorded this track on March 26, 1969
as part of the album side titled 'Amsterdam', which consisted of conversation
with the press and the tracks titled 'Good-bye Amsterdam, Good-bye', 'John
John (Let's Hope For Peace)', 'Bed Peace', and 'Good Night'. This track,
produced by John and Yoko, was released on the LP "Wedding Album" in
the US on October 20, 1969, and in the UK on November 7, 1969.
During the spring of 1969 John performed a spur of the
moment version of this song while appearing on Israeli radio. This performance
has been bootlegged and can be found on "The Toy Boy."
