The Beatles held rehearsal sessions at George Harrison's
home in Esher on May 20, 1968, during which they recorded a demo different of
'Cry Baby Cry'. This recording has also been bootlegged and can be found on
"The 1968 Demos (CD) and "Unsurpassed Demos" (CD).
The Beatles began proper recording sessions for 'Cry
Baby Cry' on July 16, 1968. Ten takes were recorded (1 - 10), take ten being a
basic track of John's vocal plus bass, organ, drums, and acoustic guitar. A
reduction mix (take 10 into takes 11 and 12) took the song to take 12 onto
which a harmonium and piano were added.
On July 18 a new vocal by John, backing vocals, a new
harmonium track, a tambourine and various sound effects were added. The stereo
and mono mixes were prepared October 15, the stereo in three attempts, the
mono in one.
Take 1 from the July 16, 1998 recording session was
released in both the US and the UK on October 29,1996 on "The Beatles
Anthology Volume 3."
