The B-side of 'Lady Madonna' and the last of three Indian-style songs written by George
Harrison for the Beatles. The title 'The Inner Light' and almost all of the song's lyric
were derived from a poem in the Tao Te Ching; the instrumental track was actually
recorded in India, at EMI's Bombay studio on 12 January 1968, after Gerorge had overseen
the completion there of his recordings for the soundtrack of the film Wonderwall.
Geroge's lovely lead vocal, and brief backing vocals by John and Paul, were taped back at
EMI Abbey Road on 6 and 8 February.
George Harrison recorded the rhythm track for 'The Inner
Light' on January 12, 1968 while working on the "Wonderwall" film
soundtrack in Bombay, India. Five takes were recorded this day, along with a
number of unused ragas. The original recording was on quarter-inch two-track
tape and was copied to four-track on February 6 (take 5, numbered take 6) and
George added his vocals that day. A mono mix was made from take 6 but never
used. John Lennon and Paul McCartney added brief backing vocals on February 8
and three more mono mixes (2 - 4) were made for release. Take 5 of the
instrumental backing track has been bootlegged and can be found on "Hodge
Podge" (CD) and "Arrive Without Aging" (CD).
This song was issued in reprocessed stereo on a Japanese
pre-recorded cassette. The stereo mix of this track was not prepared until
January 27, 1970 and not released until December 7, 1981 on a bonus EP as part
of "The Beatles EP Collection" box set.
John sings lead vocals on a performance of this song on
January 28, 1969, recorded during rehearsals for the aborted "Get
Back" film/album project. This performance has been bootlegged.
