Magical Mystery Tour - track 2

Paul McCartney recorded a mono two-track demo of this song for acetate cutting purposes, sitting alone at the piano on September 6, 1967. This demo was released in both the US and the UK on March 19, 1996 on "The Beatles Anthology Volume 2." The recording of this song actually began September 25. Three takes of the basic rhythm track were recorded this day. The reduction mix-down (take 3 into take 4) received overdubs of Paul's vocals, drums and a recorder (also played by Paul). This take 4 was also released on "The Beatles Anthology Volume 2."

September 26 another tape reduction (take 4 into take 5) was made and more overdubs added - including new lead vocals by Paul. Another reduction mix (take 5 into take 6) was made and more overdubs added. More McCartney vocal was added September 27 and flute overdubs were added October 20. Three mono mixes were prepared October 25 (10 - 12) and the song (mix 12) was edited to 2'57". The stereo mix was completed November 1 in five attempts with the fifth being the released version. The track was released in the UK on December 8, 1967 on the "Magical Mystery Tour EP.

The mono version has a slightly different vocal mix. At the end of the song, just after the last chorus, Paul begins ad-lib singing "round and round and round." This is not as loud in the mono version.

Paul and Wings performed this song at several concerts during late 1979 including Liverpool (November 25), Wembley (December 7), Glasgow (December 17) and at London's Hammersmith Odeon (December 29). All of these performances have been bootlegged.

Paul performed this song at several concerts during his 1989 - 1990 world tour including Stockholm's Johanneshovs Isstadion (September 30), Milan (October 26), Rotterdam (November 8), Los Angeles (November 23 and 27), New York (December 15), Berkeley (March 31 and April 1), Glasgow (June 23) and Washington, DC (July 4). All of these performances have been bootlegged.

Paul also performed this song at his concert at Wembley Arena on January 13, 1990. This performance was released on his album "Tripping The Live Fantastic" in both the US and the UK on November 5, 1990.
