The Beatles began recording this song on June 14, 1967 for the television
show "Our World." On this day 33 takes of the rhythm track were
recorded and a reduction mix made of take 10. Lead and backing vocals were
added on June 19, along with drum, piano (played by George Martin) and banjo
(played by John). Two mono remixes were prepared June 21 and a new tape
reduction was made June 23 with 10 takes of superimposed orchestra (34 - 43).
Four additional overdubs (44 - 47) were added June 24.
The Beatles recorded additional takes of rehearsals on June 25 - the day of
the broadcast - with take 58 being the live broadcast. This take used the
pre-recorded rhythm track from take 10. The vocals, bass guitar, lead guitar
solo in the middle eight, drum and orchestra were live for the broadcast. Both
a run through from the "Our World" broadcast and the broad cast
itself have been bootlegged. Later that evening, after the broadcast, a snare
drum roll intro and re-done Lennon vocals were added to the basic track. The
mono mix was prepared June 26. Nine mixes were done, only five were complete.
Remix 4 was used for release on the UK single on July 7, 1967. Another mono
mix (11) was prepared for the soundtrack for the film "Yellow
Submarine.
"The stereo mix was prepared October 29, 1968 for the LP, "Yellow
Submarine." The mono version runs 3'57" and can be heard on all the
original singles. The true stereo version was shortened to 3'48" by
eliminating the second strain of 'Green sleeves' in the fade-out. The mono
version of the UK LP "Yellow Submarine" has the stereo mix with the
tracks combined to simulate mono, rather than a unique separate mono mix.
