The Beatles began recording 'Fixing A Hole' on February
9, 1967 for release on the LP "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club
Band." They recorded three takes, with the first two being complete and
the third being a breakdown. Take 2 was marked "best" and on
February 21 another take was recorded (again called take 1) and was to be
mixed together with the original take three. This idea was not used and a
reduction mix of take two into (again) take three was made. Overdubs were then
recorded and mono mixes were prepared. These mono mixes were labelled 2 - 6
(there was no mix 1) and mixes 3 and 6 were edited together. This edited mix
was used for release. The stereo mix was completed April 7 in one attempt from
take 3.
Paul McCartney also performed this song each evening
during the taping of MTV's "Up Close" program at the Ed Sullivan Theatre
on December 10 - 11, 1992. This program aired February 3, 1993 and both
nights' performances have been bootlegged.
Paul performed this song at several concerts during his
1993 New World Tour including Milan (February 19), Frankfurt (February 23),
Melbourne (March 9), Sydney (March 16), Las Vegas (April 14), Anaheim (April
17), Paris (October 13), Tokyo (November 12) and Mexico City (November 27).
All of these performances have been bootlegged.
