Written by John and Paul specially for Ringo, this catchy sing along number was unlike anything the Beatles had ever made before, and unlike anything which followed. Either loved or hated - it seems there are no in-between feelings for this song - it nonetheless made number one when issued as a single with Eleanor Rigby and also inspired the making of the extremely successful Yellow Submarine feature film in 1968.

On this day, they recorded four takes of the rhythm track onto which they overdubbed the vocals. These takes had a much longer introduction than was eventually released. A reduction mix was made this day, of take four into take five. On June 1, innumerable superimpositions were added to take five including all the sound effects. One long introduction - a spoken passage by Ringo Starr - was recorded but never used.

A rough mono mix was created June 2 from take 5. On June 3, five more mono mixes were prepared (1 - 5) and Ringo's spoken intro was discarded. Mono remix five was used for release. Two stereo mixes were prepared June 22.

A new remix of this track - with the longer introduction - was issued as a bonus track on The Beatles' 'Real Love' CD single. This single was released in both the US and the UK in March 1996.

This song was recorded by The Black Dyke Mills Band on June 30, 1968. Paul McCartney produced the recording. It was released as a single in the US on August 26, 1968 and in the UK on September 6, 1968.

During the celebration of John 31st birthday in a hotel room in Syracuse, New York, John, Ringo, Yoko Ono, Phil Spector, Klaus Voorman, Allen Ginsberg, Jim Keltner, Eric Clapton, Mal Evans and Neil Aspinall recorded this song. This recording has been bootlegged and can be found on "John Lennon's 31st Birthday Party" (CD), "Let's Have A Party" (CD) And "The Beatles: Artifacts Volume III" (CD).

Ringo recorded a new version of this song for the NBC-TV special "Ringo" which aired April 26, 1978. This recording has been bootlegged and can be found on "Ognir Rrats Greatest Hits." Ringo appeared on the "Saturday Night Live" television show on December 8, 1984. During this appearance, he joined Billy Crystal in a medley, which included this song. This medley has been bootlegged and can also be found on "Rizz Off!"

Ringo performed this song during a concert with his All-Starr Band at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, California on September 2, 1989. This performance has been bootlegged and can be found on "Live From The Pacific Amphitheater."

Ringo and his All-Starr Band performed this song at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on July 13, 1992. This track was released in the UK and the US on September 14, 1993 on the album "Ringo Starr And His All-Starr Band: Live From Montreux."

Ringo's performance of this song, with his All-Starr Band during his concert in Copenhagen, Denmark on July 18, 1992 has been bootlegged and can be found on "Ringo Starr And His All-Starr Band Live In Copenhagen Denmark" (CD).

This song was performed during Ringo's concert at the Budokan Arena in Tokyo, Japan during 1997. Ringo sings lead vocal on this track released in the US on August 12, 1997 on "Ringo Starr And His Third All-Starr Band Volume 1."

Ringo Starr performed this song during his concert at Pine Knob in Detroit in 1997. The track was released in the US during the summer of 1998 on the home video cassette "Ringo Starr And His 4th All-Starr Band."

Yellow Submarine Remix details

This new mix of the Yellow Submarine master emphasises its many and varied sound effects and features, un-miss ably, a novel introduction to the song, spoken by Ringo over marching sound effects, that has remained unheard until now.
