A powerful Paul McCartney, this thoughtful song was recorded by Paul and Ringo only, with outside assistance in the form of a French horn overdub by Alan Civil, then the principal horn player with the Philharmonica.
The Beatles recorded 'For No One' in nine takes were recorded with the tenth take being an overdub. Paul McCartney's vocals were overdubbed May 16. A tape reduction of take 10 was made into takes 13 and 14 on May 19 after the French horn solo had been added. Six mono remixes from take 14 were prepared June 6 and two more remixes (7 and 8) were created June 21. The stereo mix was also completed June 21. A studio outtake of this song has been bootlegged.
A documentary on the making of Paul McCartney's film "Give My Regards To Broad Street" was filmed between November 5, 1982 and May 8, 1983. This documentary was aired on October 14, 1984 in the UK on "The South Banks Show." This film contained a version of 'For No One' not included in the final movie. This version has been bootlegged and can be found on "The Beatles: Artefacts Volume III" (CD). Paul recorded a new version of this song between November 5, 1982 and May 8, 1983 for the film "Give My Regards To Broad Street." This track was released on the soundtrack album in both the US and the UK on October 22, 1984.
