Two performances of John's new song I'm Only Sleeping, recorded towards the end of the session in which vocal tracks had been overdubbed on to Eleanor Rigby.
The first is a brief instrumental rehearsal - distinguished, usually, by a vibraphone part being played along with the acoustic guitar and drums. This recording nearly didn't survive: the session tape was spooled back after the Beatles had finished rehearsing and five proper, number takes were recorded anew from the top, wiping over the earlier sounds. The last of these stopped just short of where the rehearsals had concluded, leaving the final minute intact.
The other version presented (in mono, because it was taped that way) is the first of these proper, number takes - recorded, curiously, two days after the Beatles had already cut takes 1 to 11, the last of which led to the Revolver master. None of these five further takes (acoustic guitar, simple percussion and joint John and Paul vocals) was used.
They worked on 11 takes of the rhythm track this day. On April 29, five more unused takes (numbered 1 - 5) were recorded and John Lennon overdubbed his lead vocal onto take 11 from April 27. The sounds of backward guitars were superimposed on May 5. George Harrison played these sections backwards after working out the notation forwards. A rehearsal take from April 29 along with the unused take 1 from that same day were released in both the US and the UK on March 19, 1996 on "The Beatles Anthology Volume 2."
The next day, April 30, reduction mixes were made (takes 12 and 13) and more overdubs were added. Four rough mono mixes were created this day from take 13. On May 12, mono remix five was created for the US LP, "Yesterday...And Today." May 20 stereo mixes (remixes 1 and 2) were created. Remix 1 was released in the US, and remix 2 was issued in the UK. On June 6 two mono mixes were created, remix 6 and 7 (numbered 5 and 6).
The differences between these numerous versions is the location, length and number of the backwards guitar effects. It has been reported that on the US stereo eight-track tape the entire guitar track is delayed one second through out the instrumental break.
