The arrangement of Paul's Got To Get You Into My Life altered significantly from first studio outing to last, the released version (Take 9) being layered with vocals and brass in addition to the group's own rhythm tracks. When the song was first aired in the studio, on 7 April, the Beatles recorded Takes 1 to 5, marking the last of these "best" (temporarily, as it turned out) and overdubbing vocals for the first time. The result is a piece of work scarcely comparable to the released version, with its different musical structure and some alternative lyrics. By the end of this session two of the tracks on the four-track tape had been filled, and doubtless the two vacant ones would also have been completed had the Beatles decided to press on. Instead, returning to Abbey Road the next day, they shelved Take 5 and moved on the song in a different direction.
The final overdub was applied on the 17 June. In-between, this Paul McCartney song became a magnificent Tamla Motown style number, complete with a punchy brass section played by five freelancers, two of whom were in Georgie Fame's backing group, the Blue Flames. Paul officially sanctioned and helped to produce a hit cover version of the song by Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers which was issued in Britain on 5 August, the same day as Revolver, Paul also revived the song in 1979 for opening Wings' live set on their final British concert tour.
In the spring of 1976 George Martin remixed a stereo version of 'Got To Get You Into My Life' in Los Angeles for the LP "Rock 'N' Roll Music." This album was released in the US on June 7, 1976 and in the UK on June 11, 1976. The original UK release of this LP consisted of direct transfers of the early master tapes, until October 1980, when the double-LP was issued as two single budget label LP's. At that time, the new George Martin remixes were used. Take 5 from the April 7, 1966 recording session was released in both the US and the UK on March 19, 1996 on "The Beatles Anthology Volume 2."
This song was also given to Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers who recorded it in mid-July 1966. Paul McCartney produced the recording and it was released as a single in the UK and the US in August 1966.
Paul McCartney and Wings also performed this song at several concerts during late 1979 including Liverpool (November 25), Wembley (December 7) and Glasgow (December 17). All of these performances have been bootlegged. The Wings performance of this song at London's Hammersmith Odeon on December 29, 1979 was recorded and released on the double-album "Concerts For The People Of Kampuchea." This set was released in the US on March 27, 1981 and in the UK on April 3, 1981.
Paul McCartney performed this song at several concerts during his 1989 - 1990 world tour including Stockholm's Johanneshovs Isstadion (September 30), Milan (October 26), Rotterdam (November 8), Los Angeles (November 23 and 27), New York (December 15), Berkeley (March 31), Glasgow (June 23) and Washington, DC (July 4). All of these performances have been bootlegged.
Paul performed this song at his concert at the Westfallen-halle, Dortmund, Germany on October 17, 1989. This performance was released on his album "Tripping The Live Fantastic" in both the US and the UK on November 5, 1990.
