Written by John around a guitar riff in 'Watch Your Step',
an obscure rhythm and blues recording by Bobby Parker that he much admired.
They recorded the song in three takes, with only take three being a complete
run through. Onto this take, they added John Lennon's and Paul McCartney's
vocals. A mono mix was prepared on October 25 but was never used. Two more
mono mixes were created on October 29, the first (remix 2) was used for the
single, the second (remix 3) was used for the Granada Television program
"The Music of Lennon And McCartney." Takes 1 - 3 of this song have
found their way onto several bootlegs. An alternate mix of the released
version is also available as a bootleg.
The stereo mix of this song was first prepared October
26, 1965 but never used. A new mix was created on November 10, 1966 for the UK
LP "A Collection Of Beatles Oldies." The US stereo LP
"Yesterday... And Today" contains this track in reprocessed stereo
with the guitar opening in only the right channel. When this song was released
in stereo on the UK LP "A Collection Of Beatles Oldies" the guitar
opening is heard in both channels.
The Beatles performed 'Day Tripper' during their live
concerts in 1966 including Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo, Japan (one show June
30 and July 1) and their final concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco
(August 29). All of these performances have been bootlegged.
