Location: Rubber Soul - track 1

The Beatles' sixth album, Rubber Soul, was recorded in a considerable hurry. Intended for the Christmas market, and therefore a 3 December release at the very latest, recording did not even start until seven weeks beforehand. Initially, but rightly so too, the album has since been hailed a major work and all the all-important stepping stone towards the new type of Beatles music explored on and after Revolver. DRIVE MY CAR, a fine Paul McCartney song, was recorded and completed in one session - but one which, by necessity, went past the midnight hour, as would most for Rubber Soul.

The Beatles recorded 'Drive My Car' in four takes, take four being the only complete version. Numerous overdubs were recorded this day also. The mono and stereo mixes were prepared October 25 and 26 respectively.

The German stereo version of the LP "Rubber Soul" features a slightly different mix of this track with the vocals centred. The mono mix found on the UK EP "Nowhere Man" is said to have a less prominent piano than the mix found on other mono releases. This track was reprocessed for the US stereo LP "Yesterday...And Today."

In the spring of 1976 George Martin remixed a stereo version of 'Drive My Car' in Los Angeles for the LP "Rock 'N' Roll Music." This album was released in the US on June 7, 1976 and in the UK on June 11, 1976. The original UK release of this LP consisted of direct transfers of the early master tapes, until October 1980, when the double-LP was issued as two single budget label LP's. At that time, the new George Martin remixes were used. On April 30, 1987 the album, "Rubber Soul" was released in both the US and the UK on the CD format. George Martin remixed the album in stereo for this release.

George Harrison appeared live on the "Rockline" radio program on February 10, 1988. During this appearance, he performed a brief acoustic version of this song. This performance has been bootlegged and can be found on "George Harrison: 12 Arnold Grove" (CD).

Paul McCartney also performed this song at his concert in Kansas City, Missouri on May 31, 1993. This performance was released on his album "Paul Is Live" in the US and the UK on November 16, 1993.

Paul performed this song at several other concerts during his 1993 New World Tour including Milan (February 19), Frankfurt (February 23), Melbourne (March 9), Sydney (March 16), Las Vegas (April 14), Anaheim (April 17), Charlotte, North Carolina (June 15), Paris (October 13), Tokyo (November 12) and Mexico City (November 27). All of these performances have been bootlegged. A performance of this song by Paul at a rehearsal following his press conference at the London Arena on February 5, 1993 has also been bootlegged.

This song was recorded by RADD (Recording Artists Against Drunk Driving) which included vocal contributions by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. This recording, first introduced in February 1994, was only available as a mail order cassette from RADD.
