I'm down was written by Paul as a piece of rocking and rollicking good fun, perfect for letting loose the larynx, letting down the hair and closing concerts with if the Beatles fancied an alternative to their usual end-of-show numbers. Twist And Shout or Long Tall Sally. Not an album track, I'm Down was issued as the B-side of the Help! single in July, the released mono mix was prepared June 18 from take seven. Issued on Anthology 2 is Take 1, played live in the studio and, as Paul had wished, turning out "pretty darn good". Listen closely at the end for Paul's comment "Plastic soul man, plastic soul", a phrase which, when slightly altered, became the title of the Beatles' sixth album, issued in December 1965.

In the spring of 1976 George Martin remixed a stereo version of 'I'm Down' in Los Angeles for the LP "Rock 'N' Roll Music." This album was released in the US on June 7, 1976 and in the UK on June 11, 1976. The original UK release of this LP consisted of direct transfers of the early master tapes, until October 1980, when the double-LP was issued as two single budget label LP's. At that time the new George Martin remixes were used.

The Beatles appeared live on the UK TV show "Blackpool Night Out" on August 1, 1965. They also recorded an appearance for "The Ed Sullivan Show" on August 14, which aired September 21.
