Pete Best was still with The Beatles when a fan taped a
July 1962 Cavern Club performance during which 'Dizzy Miss Lizzie' was
recorded. Paul McCartney purchased this tape at Sotheby's auction on August
29, 1985. No other copies of this recording have surfaced.
The Beatles recorded this song on May 10, 1965. By this
time Ringo Starr had long ago replaced Pest Best on drums. Seven takes of the
song were recorded on this date. Both the mono and stereo mixes were prepared
from take 7 this day.
The mono version fades out early, shortening the song
somewhat. The song was reprocessed for the US stereo LP "Beatles VI"
released June 14, 1965. In the spring of 1976 George Martin remixed a stereo
version of 'Dizzy Miss Lizzie' in Los Angeles for the LP "Rock 'N' Roll
Music." This album was released in the US on June 7, 1976 and in the UK
on June 11, 1976. The original UK release of this LP consisted of direct
transfers of the early master tapes, until October 1980, when the double-LP
was issued as two single budget label LP's. At that time, the new George
Martin remixes were used. On April 30, 1987 the album, "Help!" was
released in both the US and the UK on the CD format. George Martin remixed the
album in stereo for this release.
The Beatles recorded this song on May 26, 1965 for their
BBC Radio holiday special "The Beatles (Invite You To Take A Ticket To
Ride)," which aired June 7. This recording was released in both the US
and the UK on December 6, 1994 on "The Beatles Live At The BBC."
The Beatles performed this song live at Shea Stadium
(August 15), two shows at the Sam Houston Coliseum (August 19) and the
Hollywood Bowl (August 29). All of these recording are available as bootlegs.
The Beatles also performed this song at their concert at the Hollywood Bowl on
August 30, 1965. This performance was recorded and released on "The
Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl" in the US on May 4, 1977 and in the UK on
May 6, 1977.
During rehearsals for the aborted "Get Back"
film/album project George Harrison and Ringo Starr performed a mostly
instrumental version of this song on January 6, 1969. This performance has
been bootlegged.
John Lennon and Yoko Ono flew to Toronto where they
participated in the "Rock and Roll Revival" at Varsity Stadium on
September 13, 1969. With the help of the Plastic Ono Band (Eric Clapton, Klaus
Voorman and Alan White), they recorded this song, which was released on the LP
"The Plastic Ono Band - Live Peace In Toronto." The LP, produced by
John and Yoko, was released in both the UK and the US on December 12, 1969.
George Harrison, Jesse Ed Davis, Bob Dylan and John
Fogerty joined Taj Mahal for a performance at the Palomino Club in North
Hollywood on February 19, 1987. During this session, this song was performed
with George singing lead vocals. This performance has been bootlegged and can
be found on "Live! The Silver Wilburys" (CD).
