The Beatles recorded 'I Feel Fine' on October 18, 1964
in nine takes, take nine being used for release. Four mono mixes of the song
were prepared October 21. Mixes 1 and 2 were never released, mix three was for
the UK single, mix four was for US release. On October 22, a fifth mono mix
was prepared; however, it was never released. The stereo mix was prepared
November 4 and was released on December 6, 1966 on "A Collection Of
Beatles Oldies."
The US LP "Beatles '65" contained this track
in reprocessed stereo. On some stereo releases including "The Beatles:
1962 - 1966," released in the US on April 2, 1973 and in the UK on April
20, 1973, a few seconds of drum sticks and whispering can be heard before John
Lennon's feedback intro. Also on this release, Ringo Starr coughs before he
opens his hi-hat drum.
Takes 1 - 2, 5 - 6 from the October 18 recording session
have all found their way onto several different bootlegs.
The Beatles recorded an appearance for BBC Radio's
"Top Gear" on November 17, 1964, which was aired November 26. This
recording was released in both the US and the UK on December 6, 1994 on
"The Beatles Live At The BBC." A final rough take from these
sessions has been bootlegged. Weiner reports that several working takes from
the "Top Gear" show had been aired on "The Beeb's Lost Beatle
Tapes," including several rough takes and a false start. None of these
recordings have surfaced.
The Beatles appeared live on the UK TV show
"Blackpool Night Out" on August 1, 1965. On August 14, they recorded
an appearance for "The Ed Sullivan Show" which aired September 12.
The former performance was released in both the US and the UK on March 19,
1996 on "The Beatles Anthology Volume 2." The latter recording is
available on several bootlegs.
During 1965 The Beatles also performed 'I Feel Fine' at
