The Beatles recorded 'A Hard Day's Night' on April 16, 1964 in nine takes, only five of which were complete. Take 9 was used for release. Ringo came up with the title after a long day of filming the movie, still untitled at that point. On April 20, 1964, stereo and mono mixes were prepared for United Artists for the film sound track. Another mono mix was created on April 23 for release on record. On June 9, an extended ending was edited onto the song for the film soundtrack. Stereo re-mixing for record release was completed June 22, 1964.
The song is slightly longer in stereo than in mono due to the longer fade-out. The version of the soundtrack released by United Artists as a pre-recorded tape extends the ending of this song even more by repeating the ending lyric "You know I feel all right" five times, where it is only three times on all other releases.
On February 26, 1987 the album "A Hard Day's Night" was released in both the US and the UK on the CD format. Originally, a new stereo mix was prepared for this release; however, George Martin later remixed the album in mono. The new mono mix is found on the CD release of the album "A Hard Day's Night."
Takes 2 - 4, 6 - 8 and take 9, with a count-in, from the April 16, 1964 recording session have all found their way onto various bootlegs, as has an alternate complete take which is found on "Ultra Rare Trax 2" (CD) and "Back Track" (CD). A different take numbered nine is found on "The Ultimate Collection Volume 3" (CD). Take 1 from these sessions was released in both the US and the UK on November 21, 1995 on "The Beatles Anthology Volume 1."
The Beatles recorded this song on July 14, 1964 for BBC Radio's "Top Gear" (aired July 16) and on July 17 for "From Us To You" (aired August 3). 'A Hard Day's Night' was also performed during live concerts at the Empire Stadium in Vancouver (August 22), the Hollywood Bowl (August 23), Philadelphia Convention Hall (September 2) and Indianapolis, Indiana (September 3). All four concerts and the "From Us To You" radio performance have been bootlegged. The recording used for "Top Gear" was released in both the US and the UK on December 6, 1994 on "The Beatles Live At The BBC."
During 1965 The Beatles played several live concerts at which 'A Hard Day's Night' was performed, including two shows at the Palais des Sports Paris (June 20), the Teatro Adriano, Rome (June 27), Shea Stadium (August 15), two shows at the Sam Houston Coliseum (August 19) and the Hollywood Bowl (August 29). All of these performances have been bootlegged. The Beatles also performed a concert at the Hollywood Bowl on August 30, 1965. This performance was recorded and released on the album "The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl" in the US on May 4, 1977 and in the UK on May 6, 1977.
