Long Tall Sally first cover version of a Little Richard song, pre-dating the medley Kansas City / Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey! by more than five months. Little Richard's music had a considerable influence on the early Beatles and his vocal style was admired by Paul McCartney who, in his cut of Long Tall Sally - recorded, amazingly in just one take - arguably outshines his mentor. The song was written by Enotris Johnson, Richard Penniman (Little Richard) and Robert Blackwell and was originally released in March 1956.
The Beatles recorded 'I Call You Name" in seven takes, only three of which were complete. Take seven was the best, with the middle eight of take five being edited in for release. An unreleased mono mix of this song was completed on March 3, 1964. Another experimental mono mix was completed on March 4, 1964 but never used. On June 4, 1964 takes 5 and 7 were mixed and edited together to form the released mono version. The same was done for the stereo release.
The guitar intro is different on the mono and stereo versions. The cowbell also comes in sooner on the mono version than the stereo, and sooner on the US stereo release than the UK stereo version.
In the spring of 1976 George Martin remixed a stereo version of 'I Call Your Name' in Los Angeles for the LP "Rock 'N' Roll Music." This album was released in the US on June 7, 1976 and in the UK on June 11, 1976. The original UK release of this LP consisted of direct transfers of the early master tapes, until October 1980, when the double-LP was issued as two single budget label LP's. At that time the new George Martin remixes were used.
The Beatles recorded this song on March 31, 1964 for the BBC Radio show "Saturday Club" which aired April 4. This recording has been bootlegged.
Ringo Starr recorded a new version of this song with Joe Walsh, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Jim Keltner for the John Lennon Scholarship Concert held on May 5, 1990 at Pier Head in Liverpool. A new video for this recording was aired and eventually released on April 15, 1991 on the home video "Lennon: A Tribute." This recording was made in late March of 1990 year and has been bootlegged on "A Little Live" (EP).
