Written by John, this is an outstanding venture in vocal harmonies, recorded live by John and Paul around one microphone. Indicative of the gulf that separated 1964 Beatles compositions and recordings over their already fast maturing 1963 counterparts.
The Beatles recorded 'If I Fell' in fifteen takes with John Lennon and Paul McCartney recorded at one microphone. Take fifteen was used for release on the album "A Hard Days Night." The mono mix was prepared March 3 and the stereo mix on June 22. John's first few lines are single tracked in the mono version and double-tracked on the stereo release. On the stereo release, Paul's voice breaks on the word "vain" in the last verse. This was corrected on the mono release. The US stereo release of the LP "A Hard Day's Night" contains the mono version of this song.
On February 26, 1987 the album "A Hard Day's Night" was released in both the US and the UK on the CD format. Originally, a new stereo mix was prepared for this release; however, George Martin later remixed the album in mono. The new mono mix is found on the CD release of the album "A Hard Day's Night."
On July 14, 1964 The Beatles recorded 'If I Fell' for BBC Radio's "Top Gear" which aired July 16. They also recorded this song July 17 for their fourth "From Us To You" radio special that aired August 3. Both of these recordings are available on several bootlegs.
Bootlegged recordings of 'If I Fell' from live concerts performed during 1964 are also available, including Seattle (August 21), Vancouver (August 22), the Hollywood Bowl (August 23), Philadelphia (September 2) and Indianapolis, Indiana (September 3). A reel-to-reel tape of John composing this song was placed for auction at Sotheby's in 1989 but did not sell. This recording can be found on "The Garage Tapes" (CD).
