The Beatles attempted to record 'I Should Have Known Better' on February 25, 1964. Only one of the three takes recorded this day was complete. On February 26, 1964 The Beatles again recorded this song (takes 4 - 22). The final version was take 9 with an overdub from take 22, adding a double-tracked vocal and harmonica. The mono mix was prepared March 3; the stereo mix was completed June 22.
The stereo version has a brief pause in the harmonica introduction, where it seems John takes a breath. The stereo version also has the final line of the song - "you love me too" - repeated four times. In mono, it is only repeated three times. The US release of the "A Hard Day's Night" LP contains the mono version of this song from the film.
On March 8, 1976 'I Should Have Known Better' was released as a single for the first time in Britain as part of "The Beatles Singles Collection." For this release the stereo mix was used even though the single was pressed in mono.
On February 26, 1987 the album "A Hard Day's Night" was released in both the US and the UK on the CD format. Originally, a new stereo mix was prepared for this release; however, George Martin later remixed the album in mono. It is the new mono mix, which is found on the CD release of the album "A Hard Day's Night."
On July 17, 1964 The Beatles recorded their fourth BBC Radio special, "From Us To You," which aired August 3. The aired version of 'I Should Have Known Better', along with a version without the harmonica and a false start from this session have all been bootlegged and can all be found on "The Complete BBC Sessions" (CD).
