The fifth single, which sold a million copies before released in Britain, and cracked wide open the US chart for the other Beatles records and other British groups to follow. The group's first four-track recording, begun and completed in 17 takes and the mono mix was prepared October 21. The track was first released in the UK on November 29, 1963. When Capital released this track on January 20, 1964 on the US LP "Meet The Beatles" the stereo version was made from the reprocessed twin-track with echo and reverb added. The stereo mix of this song was created November 7, 1966 for release on the LP "A Collection Of Beatles Oldies." Stereo mixes were also prepared October 21, 1963 and June 8, 1966, but were never released.
This song was also recorded by The Beatles during an appearance on the "The Morecambe And Wise Show" on December 2, 1963. This recording was released in both the US and the UK on November 21, 1995 on "The Beatles Anthology Volume 1."
The Beatles performed 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' at their December 7, 1963 concert at the Empire Theatre in Liverpool. BBC Television filmed this performance for a 30-minute program titled "It's The Beatles." The Beatles also recorded this song on December 17 for BBC Radio's "Saturday Club" (aired December 21 and February 15, 1964), and December 18 for "From Us To You" (aired December 26). All three of these recordings are available on several different bootlegs.
The Beatles performed 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' live on UK TV's "Val Parnell's Sunday Night At The London Palladium" on January 12, 1964. They also performed this song live on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on February 9, along with taping another performance for the February 23 broadcast of the show. On February 16, they held an afternoon dress rehearsal and a live performance that evening, again, for "The Ed Sullivan Show." All of these performances have been bootlegged.
The Beatles performed live concerts during 1964 including Paris (January 19), Washington, D.C. (February 11), K.B. Hallen in Denmark with Jimmy Nicol replacing Ringo (June 4), Adelaide (June 12), Melbourne (June 17), Seattle (August 21), Vancouver (August 22), the Hollywood Bowl (August 23), Philadelphia (September 2) and Indianapolis, Indiana (September 3). All of these performances have been bootlegged.
