George's first solo composition, on which he also sings lead. (With only a few exemptions, the lead vocalist on Beatles songs was the predominant composer. This remains the most reliable method of identifying a Lennon song from a McCartney song, despite their blanket credit of Lennon/McCartney.)
The Beatles began recording on September 11, 1963 for release on their second LP, "With The Beatles." Seven takes were recorded, but they remade the song the next day, recording takes 10 - 19 on September 12, 1963. The released version was take 15, an overdub onto take 13. The mono mix was prepared on September 30; the stereo mix October 29, 1963. This song was released in reprocessed stereo on the US LP "Meet The Beatles" on January 20, 1964. On February 26, 1987 the album, "With The Beatles" was released in both the US and the UK on the CD format. Originally, a new stereo mix was prepared for this release; however, George Martin later remixed the album in mono. The new mono mix is found on the CD release of the album "With The Beatles."
Takes 10 - 13 from the 1063 recording sessions have all found their way onto different bootlegs. Takes 11 and 12 are both false starts, take 13 appears before the final overdubs have been added. A tape of George composing this song was auctioned at Sotheby's in 1989 and found no buyers, but can be found on "The Garage Tapes" (CD).
