Meet The Beatles - track 11

Ringo's vocal vehicle on With The Beatles was this Lennon/McCartney song written principally for the Rolling Stones to record and release. It became their second single on 1 November 1963 (three weeks ahead of the With The Beatles LP) and first Top 20 success. The Beatles' recording began on 11 September, one day after John and Paul had polished off the composition in front of an impressed Rolling Stones at the Stones' rehearsal venue in London.

The Beatles recorded one take of 'I Wanna Be Your Man'. On September 12 they recorded takes 2 - 7, and George Martin overdubbed Hammond organ on September 30, 1963 (takes 8 - 13). On October 3 two more overdubs were completed, including Ringo Starr's maraca (takes 14 - 15). More overdubs were added on October 23 (take 16), after which the mono mix was prepared. The stereo mix was prepared October 29. Take 16 was used for release.

When Capital released this track on January 20, 1964 on the US LP "Meet The Beatles" the stereo version was reprocessed from the twin-track with echo and reverb added.

In the spring of 1976 George Martin remixed a stereo version of 'I Wanna Be Your Man' in Los Angeles for the LP "Rock 'N' Roll Music." This album was released in the US on June 7, 1976 and in the UK on June 11, 1976.

On February 26, 1987 the album "With The Beatles" was released in both the US and the UK on the CD format. Originally, a new stereo mix was prepared for this release; however, George Martin later remixed the album in mono. The new mono mix is found on the CD release of the album "With The Beatles."

The Beatles recorded 'I Wanna Be Your Man' on January 7, 1964 for BBC Radio's "Saturday Club" (aired February 15) and again on February 28 for their second holiday special "From Us To You" (aired March 30). The former recording has been bootlegged while the latter was released in both the US and the UK on December 6, 1994 on "The Beatles Live At The BBC."

This song was also recorded April 19, 1964 for the Associated-Rediffusion Television special "Around The Beatles" which aired May 6. This film was shot something during the middle of 1992 during the recording of Paul's "Off The Ground" album. The film, including this version of 'I Wanna Be Your Man' was released on home video cassette in October 19, 1993.

Paul McCartney performed this song at the sound check before his concert in Sydney, Australia on March 22, 1993. This performance was recorded and released in both the US and the UK on November 16, 1993 on his album "Paul Is Live."
