Some Other Guy was first recorded in 1962 by Richie Barrett. Not much of a hit anywhere, but a Liverpool anthem as almost every Mersey group tackled it.
Tony Sheridan, in an interview in 1975, seemed to remember that he and The Beatles recorded 'Some Other Guy' at the June 22 - 23, 1961 recording session in Hamburg, Germany, with John Lennon singing lead. No copies of this recording have ever surfaced.
The Beatles were filmed at the Cavern Club on August 22, 1962 by Granada TV for the show "Know The North." The segment was never aired due to poor sound quality. Ringo Starr had only joined the group four days before on August 18, 1962. A second "take" was recorded this day. Acetates of this recording were made and sold at Brian Epstein's NEMS Record Store. This second take is found on the bootleg LP "Stereo Walk." The first take, which was to be shown on television, is found on "The Beatles Live In The United Kingdom" (CD). Another session, held at the Cavern Club on September 5, 1962, was recorded and featured 'Some Other Guy'. Reportedly only five 7-inch and one 12-inch acetate of this recording were ever made. No copies of this recording have surfaced.
The Beatles recorded 'Some Other Guy' on January 22, 1963 for BBC Radio's "Saturday Club" show, which aired January 26, and once more on June 19 for the BBC Radio show "Easy Beat" which aired June 23. The former recording has been bootlegged while the latter was released in both the US and the UK on December 6, 1994 on "The Beatles Live At The BBC."
