The Beatles, with Pete Best on drums, recorded 'Ask Me Why' on June 11, 1962 for their appearance on BBC Radio's "Here We Go" show which aired June 15. This was The Beatles' second radio appearance; however, it was to be Pete's last. Ringo Starr replaced him on August 16. Pete was on hand a few days earlier when, on June 6, he, John, Paul and George had their first recording session (probably an artist test) with George Martin at EMI. Along with 'Ask Me Why' The Beatles also recorded 'Love Me Do', 'P.S. I Love You' and 'Besame Mucho'. Only 'Besame Mucho' and 'Love Me Do' have survived from this session. Pete was still with The Beatles when a fan taped a Cavern Club performance in July 1962, during which 'Ask Me Why' was recorded. Paul McCartney purchased this tape at Sotheby's auction on August 29, 1985. No other copies of this recording have surfaced.
A live recording of this song from the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany was made December 31, 1962 while The Beatles were performing their stage act. This recording, however, was not released until April 8, 1977 in Germany and May 25, 1977 in the UK on the album "The Beatles Live! At The Star Club In Hamburg, Germany; 1962."
The Beatles recorded 'Ask Me Why' for release on November 26, 1962 in six takes with take six being used for release. The mono mix was prepared on November 30; the stereo mix was done February 25, 1963. This track was released in the UK on the album "Please Please Me." The simulated mono version was released on the US LP "The Early Beatles" on March 22, 1965 and contains the stereo mix with the separate tracks combined into one.
On February 26, 1987 the album "Please Please Me" was released in both the US and the UK on the CD format. Originally, a new stereo mix was prepared for this release; however, George Martin later remixed the album in mono. The new mono mix is found on the CD release of the album "Please Please Me."
This song was also recorded September 3, 1963 for broadcast on BBC Radio's "Pop Go The Beatles," which aired September 24. This recording is available on several bootlegs.
